International Women’s Day 2022

NAWOLG join the global community in commemorating International Women’s Day on the 8th March  2022 by celebrating local young women leaders breaking the bias in their field.

Community Engagement in Sports and GBV Prevention – 2022

The young women clubs successfully organized football and netball tournaments that attracted large crowds, combining sports with education on gender-based violence (GBV) prevention. Over 3,000 community members across three districts participated directly, enhancing their understanding of various GBV forms, reporting channels, their rights, and strategies to prevent sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV). The initiative also addressed harmful cultural practices contributing to domestic and sexual violence under the motto ‘Together we can end violence against women and girls.’

Young Women’s Markets for Economic Empowerment – 2022

Young women in Kasungu, Lilongwe, and Blantyre organized markets to promote economic empowerment and raise awareness about ending violence against women and girls (VAWG). They sold a variety of handmade items, including confectionery, tailored clothes, rugs, and ornaments, showcasing skills learned in their clubs. These markets have significantly improved the quality of life and health of the participants. The clubs serve as local hubs and safe spaces, offering livelihood skills and promoting income-generating activities such as pig and soybean farming, selling mandazi, wood planks, zitenje (wrap cloths), and shoes. By becoming resourceful economic agents, these young women are taking control of their futures and supporting their families and communities.

HOW WE STARTED

NAWOLG came into being in 1996 with the idea of a gallant human rights fighter/activist Mrs Faustace Chirwa with the support of 25 members representing all the sectors of the economy. The Organization cropped up after discovering that Malawi, women who are a majority of adult population (51.8% according to) were poorly represented in decision-making positions, at an average of approximately 9%.

The NAWOLG’s establishment is with the acknowledgement that every human being in society is entitled to enjoy human rights and have them protected by law. As for membership, it is open to all women, girls and gender sensitive men committed to fighting for the gender inequality manifested in the Malawian society. The main beneficiaries of our Organization are women and girls especially in the grassroots communities.

Our Vision

NAWOLG’s vision is  for a transformed Malawian society in which women, men, girls and boys participate equitably and equally.

Our Mission

To be a leading organization in transforming the socio-economic and political status of Malawian women and girls with a view to narrowing the gender inequalities in all sectors of the economy using rights-based approaches through advocacy and lobbying, capacity building, public education and awareness raising.

16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM – 2020

We conducted an intense 16 day digital campaign in probably the most challenging year of COVID-19. A spike rise in sexual harassment cases in Malawi saw many devastating gross injustices, physical harm and mental trauma against women and children. A collective effort was our strategy during the 16 days of Activism by partnering with influencers  and other public figures to stand against rape and impunity.

MEET OUR TEAM

The organizational structure at NAWOLG constitute a team of highly motivated young women and men who are determined to deliver to their full potential.
